Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to online platforms. Her staff has already seen patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may subject users to potentially significant health risks”.
